EXCERPT: "Slovakia pledged about 250 extra soldiers Tuesday to the NATO-led force in Afghanistan, the first of what British Prime Minister Gordon Brown said would be a series of international reinforcements. The central European country will double the size of its 246-strong contingent in Afghanistan, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said in a joint statement with Brown following talks in the British capital. Brown, who has said he is lobbying allies in Europe and elsewhere for as many as 5,000 extra soldiers, said more such announcements were on their way. 'We will be approaching other countries and I believe that, including Britain, maybe 10 countries will be prepared to give extra support in Afghanistan,' he said."

EXCERPT: "Slovak parliament has approved a government plan to send more soldiers to join the NATO-led peacekeeping mission in Afghanistan. The vote was unanimous on Thursday [19 June 2008] to increase the number of Slovak troops in Afghanistan to as many as 246 by next year. They would mostly be deployed in Afghanistan's Uruzgan and Kandahar provinces. Of the 126 lawmakers present in the 150-seat parliament, seven abstained from the vote."

EXCERPT: "The Slovak government on Wednesday approved a plan to more than double the central European country's military presence in Afghanistan, Prime Minister Robert Fico said. The proposal, yet to go before parliament, raises the limit for the number of Slovak troops in Afghanistan to 246 from 115. Slovakia has 69 engineers, officers and doctors deployed in Afghanistan. The former communist-ruled NATO member plans to increase that number to 115 by September, Defence Ministry spokesman Vladimir Gemela said. Fico told journalists Slovakia would stick to its policy of sending only engineers, doctors or security personnel guarding military bases."

EXCERPT: "Slovak Defense Minister Jaroslav Baska says his country intends to double the number of its soldiers serving in Afghanistan by 2010. 'By 2010 we want to rise our mandate in this mission to about 250 or 280 soldiers,' Baska said Wednesday [23 April 2008] at a press conference. Slovakia currently has a 69-strong force in Afghanistan which is set to increase to 115 soldiers this year, Baska said, adding that the extra troops would be sent to Uruzgan in southern Afghanistan. Earlier this month, President Bush again exhorted leaders of NATO's 26 member states to boost their troops in Afghanistan."

EXCERPT: "Slovakia will definitively withdraw all troops from Iraq after almost four and a half years, and send more soldiers to NATO operations in Afghanistan and Kosovo, the Slovak parliament confirmed on Tuesday... Slovakia will send another 50 troops to Afghanistan next year so their total number will increase to 111. A new 35-member guarding unit will go to Afghanistan to protectthe Tarin Kut air base in the Afghan province of Oruzgan. An eight-member Slovak team will work in the Czech field hospital at the Kabul airport for six months. Other Slovak soldiers will operate in provincial reconstruction teams, in the ISAF command and they will also help train the Afghani military. At present, Slovakia has 57 engineers in the International Security and Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan."
